The word Shiro means head and dhara is a constant flow of warm ayurvedic oil. This oil is specially selected by the ayurvedic doctor. Buttermilk can also be chosen for dhara, however it depends on the condition of the patient. Shirodhara entangles an uninterrupted stream of oil that is nicely swayed on the forehead which relaxes the nervous system entirely and soothes the mind. It is very advantageous in the conditions like insomnia, hypertension, anxiety & psychiatric problems. It is also very effectual for paralysis, senile dementia & other neurological disorders. It enhances the memory as well.
This is a unique Ayurvedic treatment which is used to set right the corrupted transforms in the retina and lens of the eyes, to strengthen or support the optic nerve, ciliary muscles & to rectify the refractive fallacies in diabetic retinopathy, etc.
For the diseases in the head area, Pichu is a palliative treatment. Due to Vata disorders in the cranial nerves, it is good for the recovery of that disease. The treatment is titled after the pleated piece of cloth which is used to cover the crown known as the pichu.
